763,755. Testing fuel injectors. SATZGER, E. Dec. 13, 1954 [Dec. 16, 1953], No. 36014/54. Class 7 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] In apparatus for testing fuel-injection pumps in which the delivery is collected in a measuring glass 17, foaming of the fuel is prevented by ensuring that injection takes place into a body of the fuel. The fuel-injection pump 1 is mounted on a test bed and connected to an injection device 3 which has secured to it a vessel 6 which is maintained filled with fuel at least to the level of the orifice of the injection device. Restricted orifices 10 connect the vessel 6 with a container 7 which has an overflow edge 11 whereby fuel can pass to the passages 12 and space 13 from which it flows through a restricted opening 15. The connection between the vessel 6 and container 7 may be by way of a spring loaded valve provided with a restricted by-pass or through a space filled with small metal balls. The chamber 6 may be formed from a transparent plastic and the form of the spray from the injection device may be viewed stroboscopically by the provision of a stroboscope 19 co-operating with adjustable contacts 25, 26 on the pump drive.
