926,578. Testing fuel injectors. LESLIE HARTRIDGE Ltd. June 24, 1960 [March 24, 1959], No. 10163/59. Class 7(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] Apparatus for testing the injections of a fuel injection pump comprises a transparent receptacle 2 filled with liquid under pressure, and into which the nozzle of an injector I is inserted, and a restricted orifice at 38, in an injector mounting plate 10 and leading to an outlet pipe 37 from the receptacle, constituting a pressure relief device, that permits the liquid pressure to rise to an amount at which air contained in the injected fuel is dissolved in the liquid, almost immediately after the air has formed the pattern of the spray in the liquid. There may be a single receptacle or one for each injector of the pump. The receptacle may be mounted in a casing (Fig. 2, not shown), incorporating a window, and is illuminated by a flashing lamp 4 timed by the adjustable position of an electric contact (Fig. 1, not shown), engaging a contact mounted on a pump drive shaft connected to the pump camshaft, which engagement makes a connection leading to the lamp and thereby enables the phase relationship of the injectors to be ascertained. In modifications there are several contacts on a disc (Fig. 4A, not shown); or several discs each having a group of contacts (Figs. 5, 6, not shown), which contacts each engage the lamp connection on a rod, the connection being adjustable along the rod to engage differently spaced contacts on different discs. The lamp 4 and the electrical circuit associated with it may, for example, be as in Specification 620,637. The lamp may be operated inductively instead of by contacts. The orifice may be adjustable, and replaced or supplemented by a pressure-operated valve.
