Abstract

888,287. Carburetters. SELDON, G. E. March 31, 1960, No. 11323/60. Class 7(3). [Also in Group XVIII] A device for maintaining a constant head of liquid at an orifice 11 which, as shown, is the jet of an I.C. engine carburetter, comprises a fuel reservoir in the form of a pan 1 having one part 8 which is wide and shallow with its floor 6 higher than the floor 7 of a narrower part 9. The pan is pivotally mounted in bearings 4 by pins 3 which project horizontally from the pan between its parts 8, 9. A fuel outlet pipe leads from the pan to the jet 11 which is disposed in the throat 18 of the carburetter Venturi. The pan is supplied with fuel through a pipe 12, the inlet flow being controlled by a valve 14 the stem 16 of which is in contact with the floor 6. When the pan is empty it balances in such a position that the valve 15 is lifted slightly to allow fuel to enter the pan. The fuel flows into the deep part 9 causing the pan to tip so that the valve is opened further. When the fuel reaches and overflows on to the floor 6 the weight of liquid in the wide, shallow part 8 increases more rapidly than in the narrow part 9 so that the pan tips back, gradually closing the valve 15. The valve finally closes when the head "h" between the level in the pan and the jet 11 reaches a predetermined value. At this point the pan is balanced. In a modification the part 9 of the pan is covered to form this part into a chamber which becomes completely filled before the predetermined head is reached.
