Abstract

763,649. Adhesive tape. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. June 15, 1954 [June 15, 1953], No. 17622/54. Class 140. The non-adhesive side of a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape having a backing of non-fibrous film material, e.g. regenerated cellulose, is rendered suitable for receiving pencil markings by applying, in a volatile aqueous medium, a uniform non-adhesive coating comprising a finely divided mineral powder, a hydrophilic colloidal agglutinant, e.g. casein or polyvinyl alcohol and a hydrophobic alkali-dispersible, alcoholsoluble, hydrocarbon insoluble gum, e.g. shellac or manilla gum. Mineral powders specified are talc, asbestine, finely divided silica, silica gel and chalk. The back-size coating composition may comprise shellac, casein, glycerine, fibrous talc, powdered silica gel, ammonia, alcohol and water. An adhesive primer coating of conventional composition, e.g. a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and natural rubber latex in an aqueous vehicle, may be employed. Pigmented primer may be used to print designs, borders, &c. The adhesive coating may be of conventional composition, e.g. a mixture of natural rubber, a rubbery butadiene-styrene polymer and a tackifier resin such as a non-acidic terpene resin in a volatile liquid medium.
