Abstract
793,391. Transfers. DENNISON MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., (Dennison Manufacturing Co.). Jan. 11, 1956, No. 1019/56. Class 100(2) A transfer comprises a water-permeable backing, a transfer layer of remoistenable quick-release adhesive, and a curl resistant sizing layer interposed between the backing and transfer layer which resists the tendency of the transfer layer to curl when subjected to ambient humidity changes, the curl resistant layer comprising small substantially non-hygroscopic particles bonded together with a binder so as to leave passageways for water through the curlresistant layer to loosen the transfer layer, the particles being readily wettable to speed up the time required to loosen the transfer layer and the binder being substantially insoluble in water during the release of transfer layer, such that the curl-resistant layer remains substantially intact during release. The backing may be of water-leaf paper, while the sizing layer may include particles of China clay, magnesium aluminium silicate, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate calcium sulphate, or titanium dioxide. Suitable binders are animal glue, wheat starch casein or "Alpha" (Registered Trade Mark) protein dissolved in borax and ammonia, polyvinyl acetate copolymer emulsion, polyvinylidene chloride emulsion, butadiene and styrene copolymer, polyacrylic resin emulsion, polyvinyl acetate, nitrocellulose, protein soluble in alcohol. Examples of the sizing coat are China clay 6 parts by weight, Alpha protein 6 parts, water 6 parts, the Alpha protein preferably being dissolved as follows: Alpha protein 450 pounds. water 250 gallons, ammonia 5 gallons and borax 37¢ pounds. In a second example, China clay 30 parts by weight, polyvinyl acetate in water containing 5 1bs. solids 10 parts and water 30 parts are mixed together. Good adhesion of the transfer on surfaces, such as baked enamel, may, be provided by making the adhesive of animal glue 30 parts by weight, rosin size 30 parts polyvinyl acetate emulsion 37 parts, methoxy polyethylene glycol 2 parts, and water 150 parts. This adhesive is prepared by dissolving the glue and rosin size in water adding the methoxy polyethylene glycol to the polyvinyl acetate and then adding this mixture to the glue and rosin mixture cooled at 110‹F. A top layer of adhesive, such as dextrin mixed with animal glue. a wetting agent, resin dispersions and a plasticizer such as glycerine, may then be applied thinly. A thin film of lacquer may be applied on the top gum layer or the printing may be applied to the top gum layer. In certain cases, the bottom gum layer may be replaced by a thin high-viscosity water-soluble layer which serves as a lubricant in sliding off the transfer. This layer may consist of cellulose gum 8 parts, glycerine 1.5 parts, water 192 parts. Alternatively, one layer having lubricating and adhesive properties may be provided, e.g. a mixture of Acrysol ¢ lb., dextrin 4¢ lbs. and water 18 lbs.
