Adjusting mechanism for use with an agricultural implement such as a forage harvester, comprises a fluid operated actuator assembled with a counterbalancing spring interposed with the actuator. As shown the harvester is mounted on the side of a tractor and a frame 13 provided with a cutter 15 is pivotally mounted about a pivot 25 and is adjusted by the mechanism which is connected to the frame 13 and to a rigid arm 30 in the machine frame 11. A cylinder 27 is provided with a supply duct 24 and is formed with a guide member 46 fixed in the cylinder by means of snap rings 47 and provided with a vent hole 51 and having a bore which receives a piston rod 40 provided with a sleeve 50 which acts as a stop. A piston 28 is mounted on one end of the rod 40 and the other end of the rod abuts against a plate 55 supported by a sleeve 56. A stud 57 engages in a screw-link 58 the other end of which engages a stud 59 attached to lugs 31 in the frame 13 by a bolt 61. A compression spring 29 is mounted between a plate 65 on the cylinder 27 and the plate 55. Pressure fluid is directed to the actuator by a conduit 22, valve 23 and conduit 24 to raise the frame 13, the valve operating to exhaust the actuator and allow it to return to its retracted position by the weight of the frame, an operating element 23<SP>1</SP> of the valve being operated by the lever 21 which controls the pump of the tractor hydraulic system.
