[Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXII] In a coupling between a tractor and an agricultural implement, in which the implement is connected to the tractor by a linkage which includes a compression member, this member is formed as a two-part link or strut comprising a piston operating in ahydraulic cylinder, which, when the pressure reaches a predetermined maximum, due for instance to the implement meeting an obstruction, collapses and throws out the engine clutch. In Fig. 2, the two-part strut 2, 5 comprises a plunger 3 movable in a cylinder 1 supplied with liquid from a reservoir 7 through a non-return valve. When the liquid in chamber 8 is compressed above the predetermined maximum pressure, a ball valve 15 is opened which allows liquid to pass by passage 15b to a space 11 behind the plunger. Owing to this action and the difference in area between ball valve 15 and its loading plunger 16, a reduced pressure in chamber 8 is now sufficient to allow movement of the plunger 3. Further movement of plunger 16 opens port 20 so that liquid may pass by connection 21 to a separate hydraulic piston and cylinder unit, shown in Fig. 6, having a rod 24 connected to the tractor clutch lever. In order to re-engage the clutch, a lever is provided which operates a cam 26 to raise the non-return ball valve 25 to allow liquid to flow back to the transmitting unit.
