Abstract

763,225. Electric measuring systems. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND, Ltd. May 23, 1955 [May 27, 1954], No. 15698/54. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for determining linear acceleration comprises a cantilever rigidly supported at its centre whereby vertical acceleration produces equal deflection of the ends and horizontal acceleration along the normal axis of the beam increases the deflection at one end and decreases the deflection at the other end by equal amounts, so that the average deflection at the ends indicates the vertical acceleration. As shown, strain gauges S1, S2, T1, T2 are fixed to the top and bottom of the ends of the beams A1, A2 and are respectively connected in pairs in series into the arms of a bridge CDEF whose output is thus proportional to the average deflection of the beams. The strain gauges may alternatively be capacity pick-offs.
