Abstract

906,237. Testing yarn. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. March 13, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 9100/61. Class 106 (1). [Also in Groups IX and XXXVI] Slubbiness in yarn is tested by passing the yarn through a ring of scanning members arranged in two equal groups, each group being connected to an amplifier and the outputs of the amplifiers being arranged to drive a counter whenever there is a significant difference between them. The detector comprises a pair of copper wires 21, 24 together with screening wires 20, 22, 23, 25 wound helically round a ring 17 with a small gap 18. The yarn becomes electrostatically charged as it passes through a draw-twister and a slub 26 will induce a charge in one or other wire 21, 24. Such charges are amplified by cathode followers A 1 or A 2 , the output of the latter being inverted at R. Whenever, then, the outputs of A 1 and A 2 differ in magnitude a signal is sent through A 3 to a counter C which is responsive only to signals above a predetermined strength.
