'1 Claims.
My invention relates to a package for shipping, storing, and handling articles such as rayon cones, which require more than ordinary protection against abrasion during such operation owing to their delicate texture and liability to fraying, or'other injury by contact'either with each other or with the walls of the containers.
The object of my invention is to provide such a package which will be simple in-construction and inexpensive to manufacture and which will be sufiiciently rigid and insure the necessary protection against abrasion.
Another object of my invention is to provide a package which will comprise a plurality of individual holders contained in a master carton, each holder carrying a number of cones, or like articles, whereby the distribution of the articles to weaving, knitting, or other machines, is facilitated.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of package made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the blanks from which the holders are formed; Figure 2 is a plan view of the other holder blank; Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the holders; Figure 4 is a vertical section through a portion of a holder showing a cone in position therein; Figure 5 is a top view of a package comprising a plurality of holders, the master carton and two of the holders being in section and the other two holders in plan; and Figure 6 is a side view of the package shown in Figure 5, the master carton and two of the holders being shown in section and the other two in elevation.
Each holder is formed from a main blank, shown in Figure 1, and a secondary or partition blank, shown in Figure 2. The main blank consists of a rectangular sheet of material, such as fiberboard, either solid orcorrugated. The blank is divided by means of transverse crease lines I, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 into a bottom panel I, a pair of side panels 8 and 9, a pair of top panels.l0 and II, a partition wall I2 carried by top panel I0, and a locking strip I3 carried by top panel II. Formed in the bottom panel are four circular openings I4. Formed in each'of the top panels I 0 and I I are a pair of circular openings I5, which openings register with the openings I4 when the holder is in assembled form. The top panels are each provided with a partially detached lifting tab I6, that on the panel I0 being adjacent the I crease line 5 and that on panel I I being adjacent the crease line L The top panel I I is also provided with a semi-detached releasing tab I'I adjacent the crease line I. The partition wall I2 is provided with a slot I8 for interlocking with the partition plate I9 which is provided with a slot 20 similar to the slot I8 but somewhat wider as it must receive both the partition wall I2 and the locking strip I3, I
In Figure 4 I have shown one of the cones adapted to be contained in the package. This cone consists of material 2 I, such as rayon, wound upon a tapered hollow spindle 22. At the lower end, this spindle projects slightly below the cone 10 to form a base 23 of the same diameter as one of the openings IA. The upper end of the spindle projects beyond the cone somewhat farther than the base to provide a highly polished part 24, known as the button, fitting snugly into 15 openings 1 5.
To assemble one of the holders the bases of two cones are placed in the opening I4 of the blank adjacent the crease line 4. The partition plate I9 is now interlocked with the partition wall and the side wall 8 bent up at right angles to the bottom panel. The top panel In is now bent over parallel to the base, and finally the partition wall is bent down parallel with the side wall, one end of the partition plate extending between the two positioned cones. Thebuttons of the cones will project through the openings I5 of the top panel III. The bases of two more. cones are now placed in the remaining openings I4, the side panel 9 bent up, the top panel II bent over, and the locking strip forced down into engagement with the slot 20 of the partition blank. As thus assembled, the holder is as shown in Figure 3, except that in this figure the cones are omitted. 35
In Figures 5 and 6 I have shown a number of holders assembled in a master carton 25. For the purpose of illustration I have showneight holders in two rows or tiers of four each, but the number of holders composing the package may be varied and will usually be greater than that shown. In placing the holders in the carton, each holder is turned at an angle of degrees relative to the adjacent holders, so that the open side of one holder will be covered by a closed side (panel 8 or 9) of the adjacent holder. The tabs I6 and I! of the bottom, or any intermediate tier, will be held that by the tier resting upon it and the buttons 24 projecting from the upper faces of the holders will enter the hollow bases of the spindles of the tier resting upon it. To provide for the reception of the buttons of the upper tier, I place upon it a pad 26 having therein openings Z'l registeringwith the openings I5 of said upper tier. These openings 21 receive the buttons of the upper tier. The carton 25 has been conventionally shown as it may be of any well-known construction. The lifting tabs l6 serve as handles to withdraw the holders from the carton, an operation which would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible. They are also of convenience when distributing the holders. The tabs I! serve as convenient means for withdrawing the looking strips l3 to open the holders.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, a carton, a plurality of cone holders in said carton, each holder having a pair of opposed open sides and a pair of opposed closed sides, an open side of each holder abutting the closed side of an adjacent holder.
2. A cone holder comprising a bottom panel having a plurality of openings to receive cone bases, 21. pair of side panels, a pair of top panels each provided with openings for cone buttons,
a partition wall carried by one of said top panels, and locking means carried by the other top panel.
3. A cone holder comprising a bottom panel having a plurality of openings to receive cone bases, a pair of side panels, a pair of top panels each provided with openings for cone buttons, a partition wall carried by one of said top panels, a partition plate interlocking with said partition wall, and a locking strip carried by the other top panel.
4. A cone holder comprising a bottom panel having a plurality of openings to receive cone bases, 8. pair of side panels, a pair of top panels each provided with openings for cone buttons,
a semi-detached tab on each top panel forming lifting means, a partition wall carried by one of said top panels, and locking means carried by the other top panel.
5. A cone holder comprising a bottom panel having aplural'i't'yof openings to receive cone bases, a pair of side panels, a pair of top panels each provided with openings for cone buttons, a partition wall carried by one of said top panels, a lockingstrip carried by the other top panel, and a releasing tab on said latter named top panel adjacent the locking strip.
6. A cone holder comprising a bottom panel provided with openings for cone bases, side panels carried by two sides of the bottom panel, a top panel carried by each side panel, said top panels being provided with openings for cone buttons, a partition plate provided with a slot, a partition wall carried by one top panel and interlocking with said partition plate, and a locking strip carried by the other top panel and entering the slot in said partition plate.

A cone holder comprising a bottom panel provided with openings for cone bases, side. panels carried by two sides of the bottom panel, a top panel carried by each side panel, said top panels beiiig provided with openings for cone buttons, eat-i1 top panel being provided with a lifting tab pos fioned adjacent a side wall, a partition plate provided with a slot, a partition wall carried by one top panel and interlocking with said partition plate, and a locking strip carried by the other top panel and entering the slot in said partition plate.
