Abstract
777,941. Electric weighing apparatus. UNILEVER, Ltd. Nov. 24, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35248/53. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XVIII] A machine for check weighing or weighing out similar masses of material comprises a member attached to a frame and deformable in response to a load including the mass to be weighed out, a reference member so constructed that it vibrates in unison with any vibrations of the loaded deformable member, and means responsive to the relative displacement of the two members. The members which are preferably identical may be either encastered or freely supported beams or, as shown, cantilevers 1, 2, and the reference member 2 supports a compensating mass 12 equal to the standard mass. The cantilevers are encastered in rigid upstanding members 3 and 4 on base 5 and an hydraulic damper preferably acts between them. If one cantilever vibrates the other executes sympathetic in phase vibrations of equal amplitude so that with the measuring beam loaded the relative displacement of the cantilevers, which is measured in terms of the capacitance between electrodes 8, 10 always equals the static displacement. The measuring cantilever may be loaded directly or through a system of levers. The cantilevers may each be replaced by three cantilevers, the free ends of which are fixed to a diaphragm, the centre of which is displaced by the mean of the three displacements. In operation a container is put on weighing platform 6 with a standard mass, the deflection recorded, the mass removed and the container filled till the same deflection is obtained. The invention may be applied to the filling machine described in Specification 701,325, [Group XVIII]. Specification 732,744 also is referred to.
