Apparatus for feeding caking material comprises a hopper 1 and a bottom closure member 2-3, the latter having a reciprocating movement and comprising a slit 20 formed by the relative vertical spacing of the two parts 2, 3, providing a cutting edge 21 which cuts a slice of the material at every reciprocation, the slice falling away through the slit. Alternatively the closure members may be oscillated and may be adjustable to vary the width of the slit, the cutting member being scraped by a scraper blade, and a spring-biased door being provided opposite to said cutting member.
