Abstract

761,981. Engine assisted cycles. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. June 21, 1954 [June 24, 1953], No. 17463/53. Classes 79(3) and 79(5). In a pedal cycle having a power unit comprising an engine 11, a clutch 19 and gearing . 21, 23 mounted on and driving a wheel hub 9, the engine crank case is combined with a housing 37 for the wheel hub, clutch and gearing, a disc 37a formed on the housing extending within a brake drum 36 forming part of the wheel and the disc 37a carrying brake shoes 47 adapted to co-operate with the inner surface of the drum. As shown the engine crankshaft 13 is connected by gears 15, 17 tothe clutch 19 operated through a rod 27 and connected by the gearing 21, 23 to the wheel hub 9, to which is fixed the drum 36 carrying spokes 38 and which is rotatably mounted at 3, 5, 7 on an axle 1. The disc 37a carries a boss 43 containing an actuating member 45 for the brake shoes 47, the member 45 being controlled through an arm 55 and a flexible connection, and a compression spring being arranged to return the arm 55 to the inoperative position when the flexible connection is released.
