Abstract

761,762. Impedance matching. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May I, 1953 [May 8, 1952], No. 12111/53. Class 40 (8). A discontinuity in a transmission line of the " line-ground " type described in Specifications 704,050, 708,601 and 761,764 is tuned out by means of a further discontinuity separated from the first discontinuity by a resonant spacing. Fig. 1 shows a junction between a " lineground " transmission line and a coaxial cable in which the outer conductor 4 of the coaxial cable is connected to a " ground " conductor 2 and the inner conductor 5 to a comparatively narrow " line " conductor 1. The conductors 1, 2 of the transmission line are separated by a layer 3 of dielectric a small fraction of a quarterwavelength thick. According to the invention, the mismatch presented by the junction is tuned out by a piece of wire 7 spaced from the junction by a distance d smaller than half a wavelength. The wire 7 is soldered in position, adjustments being made whilst the solder is still molten. The wire 7 may extend around the edge of the dielectric layer 3 to contact the " ground " conductor 2, thus forming a short circuit. Such a shorting loop may be formed integrally with the line conductor 1, adjustment being effected by cutting away portions of the loop to increase its distance from the junction. A further form of tuning susceptance (Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a short conductive post extending through the dielectric layer between the two conductors. In the modification of Fig. 7, the susceptance is formed by a step 28 in the width of conductor 1. To adjust the susceptance, portions 31, 32, 28a of the conductor 1 are cut away or extra conductive material is added in the form of solder. The susceptance may be in the form of a pair of short lateral extensions on either side of the line conductor 1. These may be gradually curved into the edge of conductor I on the side of the lateral extensions remote from the junction. A further form of tuning element for the resonant space between the junction and the susceptance comprises a threaded post which extends by a variable amount into the dielectric layer 3.
