Abstract
A blowing agent for use in preparing cellular synthetic rubbers and resins consists of dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine and a non-acidic organic activating compound therefor containing at least one hydroxyl group, or existing in tautomeric forms one of which contains at least one hydroxyl group, or a thio analogue of either of such compounds, or a mixture of two or more of such compounds and/or their thio analogues. Specified materials are butadienestyrene copolymer, neoprene, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene-polyisobutylene mixture. The activating compound serves to lower the temperature of decomposition of the dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine and specified are urea, biuret, ethanolamine, tris - (hydroxy-methyl)-aminomethane, glycerine, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, methyl acetoacetate, acetamide, thiourea, sorbitan monolaurate, triethanolamine, monomethylolhydantoin, sorbitol, glucose, starch, cellulose, glycine anhydride, and dimethylolurea.ALSO:A blowing agent for use in preparing cellular rubber or synthetic plastic compositions consists of dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine and a non-acidic organic activating compound therefor containing at least one hydroxyl group, or existing in tautomeric forms one of which contains at least one hydroxyl group, or a thio analogue of either of such compounds, or a mixture of two or more of such compounds and/or their thio analogues. The activating compound serves to lower the temperature of decomposition of the dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine and may comprise 1, 2 glycols a carboxamide such as urea or biuret, or an amino alcohol such as ethanolamine or trio (hydroxy-methyl) aminomethane. In one example a rubber stock is prepared by milling together 100 parts pale crepe rubber, 7 parts 40 per cent dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine 60 per cent inert filler, 4 parts biuret, and vulcanizing and other ingredients. The composition is precured by steam heating in mould under pressure and finally cured by steam heating in a mould under atmospheric pressure. Other examples described concern the preparation of compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, GRS and neoprene synthetic rubbers, and a polyethylene-polyiso-butylene mixture, respectively. As activating compounds are also mentioned, glycerine, diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, methyl acetoacetate, acetamide, thiourea sorbitan monolaurate, triethanolamine, monomethylolhydantrin, sorbitol, glucose, starch, cellulose, glycine anhydride, and dimethylolurea.
