Abstract

A smooth surface is produced on metallic foil by subjecting the rough surface of as-rolled foil to a solution consisting of 40-80 per cent by volume 95.5 per cent H2SO4, 15-40 per cent by volume 70 per cent HNO3, 10-35 per cent by volume 48 per cent HF and up to 20 per cent by volume H2O. Preferably the solution consists of, by volume, 5 parts H2SO4, 2 parts HNO3 and 1.5 parts HF (acid strengths being as above). The foil, which may be of Ta, Ti or Zr, may subsequently be oxidized as by anodizing and used as an element in an electrolytic capacitor.
