761,628. Inflatable structural element for aircraft ; collapsible boats. KLEPPER, H. Sept. 21, 1954 [Sept. 21, 1953 ; Feb. 16, 1954], No. 27243/54. Classes, 4 and 113. [Also in Groups VII, X and XIV] A pneumatic construction element which may be used as a stiffening member in a folding boat or in a glider stated to be capable of use by a parachutist comprises an inflatable flexible tube having a flexible outer cover which circumferentially encloses the tube and, when the tube is inflated, tightly fits the tube, two sheets of resilient material being provided between the tube and the outer cover, each sheet in its longitudinal direction being substantially coextensive with a different circumferential portion of the tube and having a transverse dimension not exceeding half the cross sectional circumference of the tube, the arrangement being such that the sheets curve to conform to the circumferential shape of the tube when the tube is inflated, but oppose bending of the inflated tube perpendicular to the sheets. As shown in Fig. 2, an inflatable tube 3 is surrounded by inner and outer flexible covers 1<SP>1</SP>, 1 between which resilient reinforcing sheets 2, 2a are provided, the covers being secured by sewing or buttons to the article with which the element is being used. To facilitate rolling up of the article, the reinforcing sheets may be secured by a rivet 2<SP>1</SP> at one end only of the covers, Fig. 3. Alternatively, the covers may be formed into a pocket which is longer than the sheets which in this case are not connected to the covers, Fig. 4 (not shown). The inner cover 1 may be omitted.
