Abstract

807,535. Pneumatic springs. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Aug. 28, 1956 [Nov. 28, 1955], No. 26249/56 Class 108(3) An air spring comprises a flexible body of rubberized fabric having a convolution 24 terminating at its respective ends in an inextensible beaded 20 portion and a cylindrical portion 26, the convolution 24 bulging without restriction radially outward beyond the portion 26 when the spring is in its normal undeflected position (Fig. 2, not shown) the portion 26 being substantially inextensible in the circumferential direction and having a diameter substantially greater than that of the beaded. portion 20. As shown in a vehicle suspension, there are two convolutions 24, 25 having respective beaded portions 20, 21 and joined by a single intermediate cylindrical portion 26, the latter is constrained by a rigid sleeve 28 on upward deflection of the axle 14 from the normal position, the beaded portion 21 telescopes .into the portion 26 as shown in full lines in Fig. 3. On extension from the normal position the spring extends as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3. The spring rate may be modified by the inclination of 'frusto-conical abutments 30, 31. These may however be cylindrical. The respective beaded portions are crimped to cylindrical cups 32, 41 which form reservoir space. The material of the bellows is of two plies of weftless fabric having cords which extend at 15-30 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the spring.
