Abstract

In a pneumatic spring, e.g. for a motor vehicle suspension, and comprising a bellows 14 reinforced by two plies 30, 31, e.g. of textile, synthetic material, or steel cables, embedded in rubber or other elastomer and running the whole length of the bellows, the ends of the bellows are in the form of beads 10, 18 each of which incorporates two extra plies of reinforcement 32, 33 which extend less than the length of the beads, the beads having a slight resilient axial and circumferential extensibility and being formed of an elastomeric material which is sufficiently hard, e.g. 70-80‹ Shore, to make them substantially incompressible radially. The beads, which are wedge-shaped in cross-section, have their plies laid in not more than two directions which are chosen so as to ensure the slight resilient axial and circumferential extensibility. The bead 16 is held in a recess 20 in a fixed pedestal 10 by a spring- loaded retaining thimble 24, the other bead 18 being clamped between the skirt 27 of a movable part 12 and a retaining ring 28. The bellows can be dismantled by depressing the thimble 24 and pulling the retaining ring 28 upward. The lower end of the ring 28 may be provided with a bead and the outer edge of the thimble retainer 24 may be serrated to provide a better grip upon the bead 16.
