Abstract

Catalytic material is coated with nickel chemically by contact with a bath comprising an aqueous solution of nickel ions and hypophosphite ions in the molar ratio of 0.25 to 0.60, the absolute concentration of hypophosphitic ions being 0.15 to 0.35 moles per litre and the initial pH lying within the range 4.5 to 5.6. Acetate ions may also be present. The material coated may be Cu, Ag, An, Be, B, Ge, Al, Tl, Si, C, V, Mo, W, Cr. Se, Te, Ti, Fe, Ni, Co, Pd or Pt. Nickel may be introduced into the bath as chloride or acetate and hypophosphitic of Na, K, Li, Ca, Sr and Ba may be used. Specifications 761,061 [Group VI] and 761,556 are referred to.
