Abstract

The method of continuously chemically nickel plating a solid body of catalytic material, comprising making an aqueous chemical nickel plating bath of the nickel cation and hypophosphite anion type and having a predetermined initial composition and pH, contacting said body with said bath for a time interval in order to effect the reduction of the nickel cations to metallic nickel and the deposition thereof on the surface of said body together with the oxidation with hypophosphite anions mitigating to phosphite anions and resulting in the depletion or tendency to depletion of nickel cations and hypophosphite anions in said bath and a corresponding decrease or tendency to decrease in their pH, said process being characterized by the addition to said bath during said time interval of a controlled amount of alkalinizing reagent essentially sufficient to restore said initial pH thereof, adding to said bath during said time interval a controlled amount of nickel cations substantially related in a first fixed proportion to the added amount of alkalizing reagent, and adding to said bath during said time interval a controlled amount of hypophosphite anions substantially related in a second fixed ratio to the added amount of nickel cations said additions of nickel cations and hypophosphite anions to said bath substantially restoring said initial composition thereof.
