Abstract

Micro-organisms growing on a solid matrix may be collected by subjecting the culture to sonic oscillations in such manner that the parts of the micro-organisms projecting from the surface of the matrix are removed therefrom without admixture of the constituents of the matrix. A liquid layer, e.g. water, is preferably applied to the matrix prior to subjecting the culture to the sonic oscillations, thus producing a dispersion. A surface-active agent may be added to the water layer to increase the degree of dispersion obtained. The preferred frequency range is from 20,000 to 30,000 cycles/second. The process is applicable to cultures of Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium notatum, Penicillium olivaceum, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus nigricans, Streptomyces griseus, Bacterium coli, Bacterium subtilis and Bacterium mesentericus. In an example a culture of Penicillium chrysogentum on an agar-agar sheet is coated with water and subjected to oscillations of frequency 22,000 c/s in a magnetostriction apparatus, to give a dark-green suspension.
