A vertically adjustable seat comprises a base plate 4 to which is joined a tube 5, the plate being screwed to or integrally formed with a base 1 ; an outer tube 7 carrying the seat 8 and a compression spring 9 urging the seat upward; clamping means for fixing the seat at any desired height being provided by a screw handle 10 bearing against the outer tube 7 and gripping it by friction.
