759,791. Animal feeding troughs. JOPSON, F. J. March 16, 1955 [March 18, 1954], No. 7969/54. Class 5 (2) In an animal feeding trough of the kind including a hopper 1 which delivers foodstuff to a feed tray 2 which is closed by an animal-actuated hinged lid 5, a dashpot device 10 is provided to control the closing movement of the lid and eliminate noise. As shown, the hopper 1 and feed tray 2 are pivotally mounted on a supporting frame 3 and the dashpot device comprises a hydraulic cylinder connected to the lid and a piston connected to the frame 3 or alternatively to the hopper 1. The piston comprises an apertured member 15 fixed to a rod 14 and a member 16 slidably mounted on the rod 14 and held thereon by lock-nuts 17, 18. When the lid is raised the two members 15, 16 will be separated, allowing oil to pass through apertures 19 in the member 15. When the lid is closed the member 16 will cover the apertures 19 so that oil will flow between the member 15 and the cylinder walls thus slowing down the movement of the lid. The lid 5 is provided with a cam 5a which rocks the hopper as the lid is raised and lowered. This rocking movement is used to actuate agitators 31 mounted inside the hopper and on a shaft 28 provided on. the outside of the hopper with a pinion 26 which cooperates with a rack 24 pivotally mounted on the frame 3.
