759,738. Magnetic recording apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 14, 1954 [Dec. 16, 1953], No. 36105/54. Class 40(2) A magnetic recording and reproducing head assembly for use with a magnetic track on the surface of a drum (not shown) comprises a non-magnetic mounting plate 6 one edge 12 of which is shaped in accordance with the contour of the magnetic drum and which plate has two recesses 7, 7<SP>1</SP> in the shaped edge 12, a first magnetic head 5 rigidly mounted in the first recess 7, and a small non-magnetic block 8, housing a second magnetic head 5<SP>1</SP>, arranged to slide in the second recess 7<SP>1</SP> in a direction substantially parallel to the said edge 12 of the plate 6 whereby the position of the second head 5<SP>1</SP> relative to that of the first head 5 can be adjusted. The position of the second head 5<SP>1</SP> is determined by an adjusting screw 16 against which the block 8 is urged by a coil compression spring 14, the block being guided by engagement of its extended part 10 in a groove 11. The assembly is mounted on a bracket 22 of recording and reproducing equipment by two screws 23, 23<SP>1</SP> by which, with the action of interposed springs 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, and the engagement of a curved edge 25 of the plate 6 with the bracket, the distance between each head and the track may be individually adjusted. There also may be provided a similar screw and spring adjustment between the bracket 22 and edge 25 to provide small displacements in the direction of arrow f. A recording and reproducing apparatus may comprise a number of such equipment engaging a multi-track drum. Each head 5, 5<SP>1</SP> comprises pole pieces 17, 17<SP>1</SP> interspaced by a thin layer 18 of mica and which after mounting in the plate 6 are cut off to be flush with the edge 12. One end of each winding 19 is connected to the plate 6 while the other is connected to external circuiting through a co-axial cable 20 housed in a recess 21 in the plate which recess after assembly can be filled with a thermoplastic composition.
