691,903. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. WRIGHT & WEAIRE, Ltd., and NIBLETT, E. H. Dec. 15, 1949 [Nov. 15, 1948], No. 29603/48. Class 40 (ii) .In a magnetic head for recording, reproducing and erasing signals on a magnetic medium, the core consists of pairs of L-shaped laminations 13a, 13b, one arm of each lamination co-operating with its counterpart to form a magnetic gap 13c, and the other arm being of alternate lengths to form an interleaved joint secured by a single screw 14. The core is flattened at the elbows and is held at the flattened parts between uprights 11, 12 which are drawn together against the core by screws 19 and a bridge piece 18, so that the tips of the core forming the magnetic gap 13c are pressed together on to a shim of non-magnetic material, the thickness of which determines the size of the magnetic gap. The assembly is mounted on a base 23, having a casing 24 of high permeability material forming a magnetic screen. A slot 24a is provided in the screen to guide the magnetic medium and permit it to press upon an arcuate brass bearing-plate 20 having a hole 20a to receive the core tips.
