Abstract

343,273. Gramophone pick-ups. HOUGH, T., 62, Glengall Road, Peckham, London. Jan. 16, 1930, No. 1607. [Class 40 (iv).] In a sound reproducing or recording apparatus, such as a gramophone pick-up, of the kind comprising a permanent magnet 1 and associated polepieces 2, between which an armature 13 carrying a stylus or cutter holder is arranged to vibrate so as to produce corresponding current variations in coils 21, the support for the armature is constituted by elements 20 of rubber or like resilient material inserted between the armature and pole-pieces, the arrangement providing a universal mounting that permits the device to be used with, or for the production of, either hill-and-dale or lateral-cut records. Each polepiece 2 in the construction shown is of bifurcated form with the coils 21 disposed in the recessed portions. The lower flange 6 of the polepiece is furnished at its forward edge with a groove 10, Fig. 3, while a block 14 on the armature 13, Fig. 5, has a corresponding groove 16, the elements 20, preferably in the form of rubber cord or rubber tubing with a hard core, being accommodated in the grooves. Notches 11, 17 along the edges of the grooves 10, 16 respectively prevent accidental displacement of the rubber elements. At its upper end the armature 13 terminates in an obliquely set blade 12 which moves in the gap between inclined surfaces 9<1>, Fig. 6, on the upper flanges 5 of the polepieces so that, whether the blade 12 vibrates in the direction "a" for lateral-cut records or in the direction " b for hill-and-dale records, it has imparted to it the necessary relative movement towards and away from the surfaces 9<1>. Adjustable damping pads of rubber or like material are mounted on the upper flanges 5 of the polepieces 2 and adapted to bear against the blade 12. When used as a reproducer, the output may be varied by arranging the magnet and polepieces to be relatively adjustable.
