Abstract

759,148. Floor treating machines; brushes; paws. ZIOLKOWSKI, S. I. July 2, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 9149/53. Classes 19, 60 and 138(1) A machine for treating floors or like surfaces comprises a pair of wheels 30, Fig. 1, freely rotatable about a common axis and a single driven brush disc or the like 23, rotatable by a shaft 17 inclined to the vertical and disposed on a fore and aft centre line extending transversely through the centre of the wheel axis, whereby more pressure will be applied to the heel of the brush disc or the like than to the toe or fore part thereof and as the brush, disc or the like rotates equal and opposite movements will be set up about the point of intersection of the centre line and the wheel axis, to balance the machine. The machine includes a casing 10, an electric motor 11 mounted thereon, a water tank 37 and a detachable guard 28 for enclosing the floor treating member 23. The shaft 12 of the motor is inclined to the vertical and has mounted thereon pulleys 13, 14. The driven shaft 17 is hollow and mounted in bearings 18, 19 so as to be parallel to the shaft 12, and carries pulleys 13, 16 or 14, 20 to afford a two-speed drive of the shaft 17. A head 21 on the shaft 17 is resiliently coupled at 22 to the member 23 which comprises a backing plate 26 supporting four segmental brushes 27 for polishing. When the machine is employed for surfacing, a wire brush is used and for sanding or finishing a rubber backed disc faced with emery cloth or the like is used and rotated at high speed. For scrubbing operations the polishing brush 23 is replaced by a fibre brush. When the machine is used for washing a floor, a pad as shown in Fig. 3 is utilized. In this case water is supplied from the tank 37 to the hollow shaft 17. The pad comprises a backing plate 32, carrying a sponge rubber pad 33 which is covered by a layer of fabric 34. The periphery of the pad is upturned from the floor and supports therearound, by spider members 35, an annular element 36. Water thrown off by the pad is discharged by centrifugal action into the element 36 and passed by a pipe 38, the inlet of which faces in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the pad back to the tank 37.
