Abstract

470,192. Treating floors. TAYLOR, F. W. March 4, 1936, No. 6585. [Class 138 (i)] A machine for treating floors and floor coverings in situ as by polishing or washing, comprises one or more rotating brushes and particularly a suction nozzle of non-rectilinear form, preferably curved as at 66, Fig. 2, with its ends lying at rear opposite sides of a brush or brushes. An even clean surface is thereby imparted to the carpet &c. Means are provided for supplying liquid to the centre of the brush, or at its edge, and the brushes may be annular or otherwise. The tank system is also improved. A main frame 10, Fig. 1, has adjustable wheels 14 and a central wheel 20 to support the machine when tilted. A detachable tank 26 carries liquid detergent and another 28, also detachable, takes waste liquid. A brush 36 is rotated about a hollow shaft 40 spur-and-clutch-driven from a motor 30. A feed pipe 52 supplies the brush with liquid. The brush has bristles of fibre or rubber preferably having the characteristics described in Specification 451,704. A fan 32 has an inlet pipe 56 with branches 57, 58 connected by a spring-pressed joint 64 to the non-rectilinear nozzle 66, preferably with a squeegee in its mouth. The nozzle is kept down by springs 68. When the machine is moved forwards it travels somewhat sideways owing to the rotation of the brush and the nozzle lying at the sides of the brush removes all the deposited dirt. The feed pipe 52 has a control valve 70 and a detachable joint 72 allowing removal of the tank 26. It also enables a flexible pipe to be attached in connection with a plant comprising suction means fixed in relation to the surface-treating means which can be connected by a flexible suction conduit to the fan outlet 60 after removal of the waste receptacle 28. A modified form of machine is shown in Fig. 3 with a suction nozzle 82 and telescopic joint 84. In another modification, two circular brushes are arranged tandem fashion and connected by a chain, belt or gearing.
