Abstract

486,499. Cleaning floors, carpets, and the like; vacuum cleaners. TAYLOR, F. W. Dec. 1, 1936, No. 32982. [Class 138 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A machine for the surface treatment of floors, carpets, and the like of the kind comprising a wheeled frame 10, a surface treating member 22, shown as a brush, adapted to be driven by an electric motor 32, a tank 44 for the supply of detergents or the like, and a suction nozzle and a fan 50 for removing dirt or liquid and passing it into a tank 46, is provided with a suction nozzle 62 of arcuate form which normally lies in front of the brush and is mounted so as to be movable to various positions. The nozzle is carried by a telescopic pipe 61 and a swivel joint 58, and has a squeegee 66 mounted in it. The pipe 61 rides on a circular rail 68 concentric with the axis of rotation of the brush 22 and can be locked in various positions by a snap catch 70. The side wings 64 of the nozzle are tapered so as to be capable of passing below the rear part of the frame 10. The nozzle may be moved around the rail by means of a windlass or gear. The brush is rotatable on a hollow shaft 24 by means of an internal gear 30 and a pinion 38 driven by the motor 32 through a slip clutch 40, and the fan 50 is driven by a motor 56. Liquid is supplied to the brush from the tank 44 by way of a pipe 99, shaft 24, and apertures 72. The brush may be readily detachable from the shaft 24. In a modification, a single motor drives the brush and fan, and the detergent and waste tanks are superposed. In another modification, the motor 32 is mounted at the rear of the machine. In all the constructions, the tanks 44, 46 are readilv removable and the pipe 99 includes a detachable joint 124. The machine may be used for cleaning carpets and the like in situ, the nozzle 62 being positioned as required relatively to the brush. Alternatively, the machine may be used in cleaning-factories by removing the tanks 44, 46, connecting the suction nozzle to a remote, high-power, source of suction, and providing a flexible pipe from a fixed tank of detergent or rinsing liquid, as described in Specification 486,500. Scrubbing members of various forms may be employed, the detergent may be heated, and its delivery may be controlled by a float valve.
