[Also in Group X] In a fire escape mounted on the rear of a fire engine by means of a pair of trunnions 5 adapted to run in guides 6 on the engine and adapted to be engaged by a pair of jaws on the escape when the escape is mounted with latches 15 unlocked, the escape is automatically locked in stowed position by its advance to this position. There is a latch for each trunnion. For mounting the escape the jaws are engaged with the trunnions which are at the left-hand end of the guides 6 with each trunnion axle 13 locked by a stop 21. Each lever 15 is then moved down about its fulcrum 16 by a handle 15a which slides a rod 25 to the right through its support plates 26 by an arm 22 of the lever 15 and a notch 32 in the rod 25 is brought into register with a lever 33 which is turned about its pivot to engage the notch by a spring and also to force up a plunger 38 so that its head is in the path of the trunnion. The escape is then moved so that each trunnion 5 moves along its guides, engages and depresses the plunger 38 and releases the latch to its horizontal position. On further movement the axle 13 rides up a ramp 18 on the latch and tilts it and snaps behind a stop 19 as the latch resumes its horizontal position and the escape is locked in mounted position. To release the escape the lever is moved up to release the axle 13 from the stop 19 and is automatically locked in this position by a spring lever 34 engaging notch 32 which is released when the escape is moved to release position by a plunger 38 depressed by movement of the trunnion. Finally the axle 13 rides up a ramp 20 on the latch and snaps behind the stop 21. The bar 25 is held in central position by springs 29, 30.
