Abstract
758,786. Moulds for hollow articles. UTICA DROP FORGE' & TOOL CORPORATION. July 27, 1954 [Aug. 20, 1953], No. 21921/54. Class 87(2) A mould for making hollow articles such as refractory tubes by hydraulic pressure of powdered materials is made with a pair of flexible walls, e.g. of rubber or rubberlike material. The articles may have intricate contours, e.g. die inserts, and be made from refractory powders such as silicon carbide or mixtures thereof with other refractory powders. Such a mould, Fig. 2, comprises two cylindrical flexible walls 10, 11 connected at their bases by an annular wall 12 and having a flexible annular cap 21; the wall 10 has grooves 17 and lands 18. The comminuted material is filled into the mould space 13 defined by the walls 10, 11 and the cap 21 put in place. Air in the powder is exhausted and the sealed mould dropped into a dead end bore of a die in which there is hydraulic fluid; hydrostatic pressure is then applied, in the directions shown by the arrows A, B, by compressing the fluid. The article is finally stripped from the mould and sintered.
