Abstract

758,732. Rotary filters. BOWATERS DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH, Ltd. Oct. 28, 1954 [Nov. 18, 1953], No. 32019/53. Class 46. [Also in Group VIII]- The suction space 13, Fig. 1, over which passes a filtering layer of felt 3 supported by a perforated carrier 1 is located in front of and behind the ends of a sealed pressure equalizing duct 9 whereby the vacuum in a bore 2 just having left the space 13 is transferred to the bore 2 about to enter said space instead of being wasted. The ends of the duct 9 are sealed against the interior of the carrier by resilient lips 8A, 8B, 8C and 8D and any filtrate collecting in the duct is syphoned away from a chamber 11. In a modification the pressure-equalizing duct is formed between partitions 20, 21, Fig. 2, having lips 22, 23, 24, 27 sealingly engaging the bore of a rotary drum filter 14 of the inward flow type having peripheral cells 17 and radial passages 19. As each passage 19 leaving the suction space bounded by the partition 20 and a portion of the bore wall passes across the upper end of the pressure-equalizing duct the residual vacuum therein is in part transferred to the bore 19 passing across the lower end of said duct. A further space in the bore formed between lips 24, 25 is connected by a duct 30 to atmosphere and a third space 32 bounded by lips 25, 26 is connected by a duct 31 to a supply of compressed air to remove the filter cake from the pad 18 to a shoot 33.
