Filter presses are formed by frames 10 and plates 14, Fig. 4, the filter cloths 18 communicating with the space outside the press so as to constitute the sole discharge paths for the filtrate. The plates may be of sheet metal a few mms. thick, or may have a textile coating impregnated with a resilient material ; preferably those parts of the frame which clamp the filter cloth have a resilient coating of rubber or a plastic material. The plates may have crevices, provided on the metal surface or on the resilient coating. The devices may be dispensed with, and a metal mesh or textile cloth 19 mounted between each filter cloth and its adjacent plate. The width of the crevices or of the interstices of the mesh is preferably less than half the thickness of the filter cloth. The suspension to be filtered is introduced at 31, Fig. 9 (horizontal cross-section), through filters 32 into channels 30 formed by apertured rubber rings 29 inoperative 16 of the plates 14, and by apertures 12 in the supporting lugs 11 of the frames 10, whence it enters the filter chambers 17 through branch conduits 13. A filter cloth 18 with backing member 19 is hung, inverted-U fashion, over each plate 14 to cover both its sides, and the edges protrude at the bottom of the press. In Fig. 7 the frame parts 23 are formed from the plates 24 ; the feed conduit is formed by apertures 22. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a peripheral frame part is welded on to each side of each flat plate ; central feed apertures are again provided.
