[Class 46.] Relates to filter-presses with double filter plates each composed of two plates, held apart to form a filtrate chamber and one or both of which are provided with ribs or projections so that the single plates give each other mutual support against the filtering pressure. According to the present invention the ribs or projections are formed of porous material. The plates may be formed of porous ebonite or soft-to-hard rubber with projections of the same material. Fig. 1 shows a single plate with lugs 1 .. 4 having apertures b .. g, which form mains for the supply and discharge of liquid under treatment, wash liquor, air, &c. The plate is provided with vertical projections 6 which contact, when the plates are in position, with the surface of the companion plate or with similar projections thereon. There may be similar horizontal projections 9, but these do not project sufficiently to prevent the downward passage of the filtrate within the double element. The plates may have metal frames 10, Fig. 9, with a coating of non-porous ebonite 10a. The frames may be moulded first and the plates moulded of partially vulcanized rubber within the frames, vulcanization being completed afterwards. Or plates and frames may be moulded separately and subsequently united by means of strips 8a, Fig. 12, of rubber coated with rubber solution which are afterwards vulcanized. Instead of rubber strips, strips of celluloid softened in acetone vapour and coated with a solution of celluloid in acetone may be used, a solid joint being formed on evaporation. Joint between the frames of the plates is made by means of rubber strips having a leather-like non-compressible layer and a layer of flexible rubber. The non-compressible layer is fixed in a groove in one frame and the flexible layer is pressed into a groove in the adjacent plate. Separate flat pieces of flexible rubber are used at the lugs 1 .. 4. As shown in Fig. 12, a single frame may be provided for the double element. Sheets of cloth, paper or soft porous rubber may be applied to the filtering surfaces of the elements. Specifications 307,525 and 328,273, [both in Class 46, Filtering &c.], are referred to.
