[Class 46] The filter cloth on either side of a leaf filter element 10, Fig. 1, is spaced away from the supporting frame, but the cloth on the opposite sides is forced inward along spaced lines by pairs of tensioning-bars 17, the bars of each pair being connected together at points outside the frame. Fig. 3 shows in vertical section a filter element with a central perforated plate 12 stiffened by straps 13 which pass round the filtrate suction pipe 11. There is a layer 14 of coconut matting on either side and a filtering-medium 15 of canvas or other suitable material. The edges of the canvas are sewn together at the top and secured by clamping bars 16 at the bottom. Fig. 5 shows an element with two layers 21, 22, of coconut matting on either side, the outer layer having slots or grooves on the outer face to receive the tensioning-bars 25. Fig. 7 shows an element in which the filtering-medium is spaced from the plate 12 by strips 27 at right-angles thereto. Strips 30 of coconut matting are arranged inside the element adjacent to the external tensioning members 29. In this form the plate 12 may be dispensed with the strips 27 being mounted on bolts. It is stated that the elements may be of cylindrical or conical shape.
