758,179. Photographic cameras with interchangeable objectives. VOIGTLANDER AKT.- GES. Dec. 7,1954 [Dec. 7, 1953], No. 35441/54. Classes 97 (1) and 98 (1). A photographic camera with exchangeable objectives has built-in mechanism for focusing the objective interconnected with a rangefinder so that the adjustment of the two is related for an objective of a given focal length, and an objective exchangeable therewith has a component which is moved alone for focusing and which has an effective focal length which up to corrections of a higher order is equal to the given focal length. A ring 7, Fig. 2, slidable in the body 1 of the camera, is coupled to a built-in range-finder (not shown) in such a way that a lens of a given focal length fN, when attached to ring 7, will focus objects at the distance to which the range-finder is adjusted on a photographic film Z. When the lens is removed for exchange, a second lens in a mount 11 is fixedly mounted on the camera by a bayonet joint 12. This objective may be of the kind described in Specification 682,605, having three components 13, 14, 19. Components 13, 14 are fixedly mounted in mount 11, with an iris diaphragm 16 between them, but the front component 19, which has the focal length fN, is slidable for focusing inside mount 11. Rods 18 are connected to a ring 17 urged by springs 20 against ring 7, and transmit the movement of ring 7 to the front component 19 so that the range-finder can be used to focus the substituted lens. When the substituted lens is substantially longer than the lens of given focal length, the focal length of the movable component is modified to allow for differences in the positions of the front focal points of the objectives. The substituted lens may be a telephoto lens. The front lens may be split, the front part only being movable, or the lens behind it may be split, its front part being movable together with the front component. The lenses and lens parts lying before or behind the split may be cemented together. The split may be bounded by plane or curved surfaces.
