Abstract

758,039. Weighing-apparatus. NEIKE, R. H. March 1, 1955 [March 2, 1954], No 6108/54. Class 143 Household or other scales comprise two springs of different rating for weighing in "light" and "heavy" ranges, the weighing being automatically transferred to the "heavy" range when the adjustable upper limit of the "light" range is reached. The scale-pan is supported on a stem 15, Fig. 2, fixed to a rectangular frame 16, the latter being mounted on parallel links 17 for movement relative to a casing 11, The lower member 23 of frame 16 is attached to the lower end of a light coil spring 22 having its upper end attached to one end of a bellcrank 19 pivoted to the casing. Depression of the scale-pan against the action of spring 22 causes a rack 24 on frame 16 to turn a pinion 25, thus moving a pointer 13 over the "light" range of markings on a dial 12. The other end of bell-crank 19 coacts with a screw 27, Fig. 3, for adjustment of spring 22 to zeroize the pointer. If the depression of frame 16 is sufficient to cause the pointer to register the upper limit of the "light" range, a forked member 31 on frame-member 23 coacts with a nut 32 on a threaded rod 30 attached to the lower end of a heavy spring 28, the latter having its upper end fixed to the casing through a nut 36 on a threaded rod 29. Further depression of frame 16 due to heavier loads in the scale-pan is against the action of both springs, and the pointer moves over the "heavy" range of markings on the dial. Nuts 32. 36 allow adjustment of the point at which the heavy spring becomes operable, and the latter may be initially tensioned by a weight 34. The springs may be mounted ore above the other. Fig. 4 (not shown), and the springs may be of leaf rather than coil construction. A modified form of scale is described, Fig. 5 (not shown), in which the components are somewhat differently arranged.
