Abstract
An ester or amide of brassylic acid is used as a plasticizer for a highly polymerized substance, e.g. a cellulose ether or ester, a polyamide, a vinyl polymer, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylonitrile and polyacrylic acid esters, natural or synthetic rubber, chlorinated rubber, or a polyester. The brassylic acid ester may be derived from an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic, cycloaliphatic-aromatic or heterocyclic hydroxy compound, specified esters including the diethyl, diphenyl, phenyl tolyl and ditetrahydronaphthyl esters. The amide of brassylic acid may be derived from a primary or secondary amine, e.g. dimethylamine or propylamine. An ester may be used in combination with an amide or in admixture with other dicarboxylic acid ester plasticizers. In an example, 5 parts of the di-isopropyl ester of brassylic acid are added to a lacquer consisting of 10 parts of nitro-cellulose, 15 parts of ethyl acetate, 30 parts of butyl acetate, 15 parts of butanol, and 40 parts of toluene. Further examples are described illustrating the production of coating materials from polyvinyl chloride and brassylic acid esters and the isoamyl ester, the dibutyl ester, and the 2-ethylbutanol ester.ALSO:An ester or amide of brassylic acid is used as a plasticizer for a highly polymerized substance, e.g a. cellulose ether or ester, a polyamide, a vinyl polymer, natural or synthetic rubber, chlorinated rubber, or a polyester such as an acrylic acid polyester. The brassylic acid ester may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic, cycloaliphatic-aromatic or heterocyclic hydroxy, e.g. diethyl, diphenyl, phenyl tolyl, dietetrahydronaphthyl ester &c. The amide of brassylic acid may be derived from a primary or secondary amine, e.g. dimethylamine, propylamine, &c. An ester may be used in combination with an amide or in admixture with other dicarboxylic acid ester plasticizers. In one example 100 parts of chlorinated rubber dissolved in 500 parts hydrocarbon solvent are admixed with 25 parts of a mixture of brassylic acid esters obtained by esterifying brassylic acid with a mixture of n-butanol and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and the solvent evaporated. In a further example 5 parts of the di-isopropyl ester of brassylic acid are added to a nitro-lacquer consisting of 10 parts nitrocellulose, 15 parts ethyl acetate, 30 parts butyl acetate, 15 parts butanol, and 40 parts toluene. Further examples are described illustrating the production of coating materials from polyvinyl chloride and brassylic acid esters.
