Abstract

A coating composition comprises a thermoplastic film-forming substance and a plasticizer of which at least 50% consists of a mixed ester of phthalic acid in which the alcohol residue in one carboxylate group is n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl or tertiary butyl, and the alcohol residue in the other carboxylate group is an unsubstituted cyclohexyl group or an ortho, meta, or para-methyl cyclohexyl group, with the exception of n-butyl orthomethyl cyclohexylphthalate. The plasticizer may consist wholly of a mixed ester as defined, e.g. isobutyl cyclohexyl phthalate, isobutyl or isopropyl methylcyclohexylphthalate, in which one of the carboxyl groups has been esterified with a mixture of isomeric methylcyclohexanols obtained by the hydrogenation of cresylic acid. The proportion of the plasticizer is within 15 to 100% of the weight of the thermoplastic film-forming substance. The thermoplastic film-forming substance may be nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetobutyrate, polystyrene or polyisobutylene. Other additives which may be present are resin-modified glyceryl phthalate alkyd resin, paraffin wax, calcium carbonate and zinc stearate. Specified solvents include mixtures of ethyl acetate or butyl acetate with toluene or xylene.
