Abstract
757,452. Plate rectifiers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 2, 1954 [July 8, 1953], No. 19438/54. Class 37. In a dry plate rectifier, the rectifying elements are enclosed in a sealed case which cools the element, the enclosure being partially evacuated. The rectifying element comprises base-plate 2, semi-conductor layer 3, counter electrode 4, and a thin metal plate 5, which may be indented, in contact with the counter electrode 4, and connected to lead-in terminal 7. The metal case 1 is sealed by insulator 8 and contacts base electrode 1. Contact with plate 5 is avoided by a thin insulating layer 6 which may be of glass. The case is evacuated so that atmospheric pressure on the thin walls of the case maintains the various layers and elements in close contact. More than one rectifying element may be included, and the element may be arranged so that plate 5 engages the case 1 while the base 2 contacts terminal 7. The case may be immersed in a cooling liquid, and a manometer may be connected to the case to indicate any leakage. The case may constitute the base electrode.
