Abstract

A process for purifying lactams comprises heating a solution of contaminated lactam in an inert organic solvent, said solution having a lactam concentration not exceeding 30 per cent by weight, in the presence of an oxidizing agent forming with the said solution an oxidation reaction mixture, the whole of which constitutes a single homogeneous liquid phase, so that the impurities are oxidized, the lactam then being removed, e.g. by distillation or extraction. The oxidation is preferably carried out at the boiling temperature of the reaction mixture and may be preceded or followed by a reduction treatment, e.g. with aluminium amalgam or sodium hydrosulphite. Specified solvents are benzene, decahydronaphthalene, carbon tetrachloride and nitromethane. Specified oxidizing agents are potassium permanganate, potassium bichromate, hydrogen peroxide, ozone and persalts. The oxidizing agent may be employed as an aqueous solution or may be added to a moist lactam solution, a homogeneous liquid phase being maintained by drying out surplus water, e.g. with dehydrating agents such as solid sodium hydroxide or anhydrous sodium sulphate, or by azeotropic distillation.
