Abstract
Polymers of unsaturated monomers, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, are purified by treating the dry polymer with dry hydrogen chloride, in the presence or absence of organic solvents or diluents and under such conditions that there is a complete or substantially complete absence of liquid water and water vapour, and then with water. The polymer may also be treated with an alcohol, e.g. ethanol or butanol-2, before, during, and/or after the hydrochloric acid treatment, and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas before or during the hydrochloric acid treatment. After the polymer has been water-washed, it may be treated with a solution of a compound which forms soluble complexes with one or more of the metals, which are to be removed from the polymer. The treatment with the complexing agent may be effected in the presence of a wetting agent and also simultaneously with steamstripping. The impurities removed are metallic catalyst residues formed from "Ziegler-type" catalysts. The washing water may be acid or alkaline. The process may be effected continuously. Complex-forming agents mentioned are oxalic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, acetylacetone, and sodium hexa metaphosphate.
