Abstract

PURPOSE: To make an ion exchange resin oxidation-resistant and enable chrome plating solution, etc. containing oxidizing agents to be treated by subjecting the ion exchange resins to halogenation.
CONSTITUTION: Sulfonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer, and other organic polymers having ion exchange ability are contacted with halogen such as chlorine, etc. under atmospheric pressure or pressure. At this time, temperature is made about -20W200°C, preferably 0W100°C and the amount of introduction of halogen is made more than about 0.05 mole, preferably 0.1W2 moles per monomer unit of the ion exchange resins. This halogenation may be executed in the absence of any solvent or in the presence of water, nitrobenzene, etc. The ion exchange resins treated in this way keeps low the amount of change of Cr6+ of chrome plating solution to Cr3+ and is extremely useful in removal of impurities such as Zn2+, Fe3+, etc. which increase gradually during the process.
