[Also in Group XXIII] A brush strip of the kind in which the brush material is secured in a channel form metal strip is made by winding the brush material around the two parallel spaced wires, forming two metal strips into channel sections gripping the brush material over the respective parallel wires and then cutting the brush material between the wires. In the machine shown the two parallel wires 14 are drawn through a wire straightener 15 and hollow shaft 12 to a former 25 which maintains the wires accurately spaced. Wire brush material is wound round the parallel wires at the former by a disc 13 from reels of the wire mounted thereon. Two flat metal strips 30 are fed through punches 36 which form fangs in the edges of the strip on to clenching rollers 31 which double the strips about the wires forcing the fangs into the brush material. The strip so produced is drawn forwardly by rollers 37 to a reciprocating cutter which divides the strip into two parts 14. Variable-speed drives 21 and 33 permit the nature of the brush to be varied. The brush strip produced will be cut into lengths which may then be formed into annular sections and mounted on a suitable holder to form a rotary wire brush. A number of such sections may be clamped together side by side or alternatively a long length of the strip may be wound into helical form and secured between end plates.
