Abstract

514,707. Paper &c. covered slivers of sisal, &c. CHRISTIE, F. M. May 13, 1938, No. 14329. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXV and XV] Relates to the bundling of sisal &c. fibre by winding strip material upon it under tension. The raw fibre, opened and combed into slivers, is fed forward through a funnel 7 surrounded by a rotary trunk 5 which carries a plate 6. A tube is formed around the fibre by winding upon it strips of paper fabric &c. carried by one or more rotary and adjustable reels 11. The paper &c. is preferably previously gummed and on its way to the fibre is moistened by a felt coated roller and tube conveving moisture from a tank 16. The product is hauled off bv contoured draw rolls 27 and by a pair of chains 24 each carrying a series of semicylindrical clasps 25 of a size to embrace and grip the packed tube of fibre. Spring-pressed rollers 26 spaced at intervals press the adjacent lengths of chain 24 towards e ch other. Bundles of fibre of small diameter can be used for the manufacture of brooms, being inserted in holes in a broom head and suitably secured after which the surrounding paper &c. may be removed. The bundles, cut into short lengths, assembled side by side, compressed laterally and bound by a steel &c. rim may also be used in the manufacture of dart boards.
