Abstract

Detergent compositions in bar form contain (1) an alkali-metal salt of a sulphated or suphonated synthetic detergent, (2) an alkali-metal soap, (3) a hydrated alkaline-earth (including magnesium) soap and (4) a salting-out electrolyte, the ratio (by weight) of synthetic detergent to total soap being 0.5-4:1, the ratio of synthetic detergent to alkali-metal soap being at most 15:1, the ratio of synthetic detergent to alkaline-earth soap being at most 5 : 1, the ratio of alkaline-earth soap to alkalimetal soap being 0.25-6 : 1, and the proportion of salting-out electrolyte being 5-30 per cent, based on the sum of the synthetic detergent and the alkali-metal soap. The alkaline-earth soap may be added as such or formed in situ. The specified sulphated or sulphonated detergents include alkali salts of alkyl sulphates or of alkylaryl sulphonic acids having 10-22 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, alkali salts of fatty acid monoesters of 1, 2-dihydroxypropane-3-sulphonic acid or of 1,2-dihydroxypropane-3-sulphuric acid, sodium or potassium monomyristoyl ethylene glycol sulphate, sodium or potassium monolauroyl diglycerol sulphate, the potassium salt of the coconut fatty acid esters of isethionic acid and salts of fatty alcohol esters of sulphocarboxylic acids, e.g. the sodium salt of the lauryl alcohol ester of sulphoacetic acid. The compositions may include also a small proportion of a non-ionic detergent or of a liquid anionic detergent, e.g. a triethanolamine alkyl sulphate containing a little water. In an example, a mixture of the potassium salts of sulphated lauryl and myristyl alcohols is mixed in specified proportions with a sodium soap, magnesium sulphate and sodium chloride, and the mixture is dried, milled, plodded and stamped. Alkali sulphates and carbonates may also be used as salting-out electrolytes, and magnesium chloride or calcium chloride may be used instead of magnesium sulphate.
