Abstract
<PICT:0755913/III/1> <PICT:0755913/III/2> Apparatus for the production of dispersions, suspensions or emulsions comprises a plurality of series of primary successive dispersing systems, each series being arranged on relatively rotatable surfaces between which the material to be treated flows, and streams of material from the series of systems being impacted against one another so as to mix and have a disintegrating action. As shown in Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a double cone 1 rotatable within a casing 2a, 2b. Teeth are provided on the outside of the double cone and on the inner surface of the casing. Material to be treated enters at 28a and 28b and, after passing between the teeth, flows through horizontal annular gaps formed with cavities 15, 151 and then through narrow gaps 16, 161. Finally the two streams impinge on one another in the annular gap 27a, 27b and leave the apparatus. In a modification, Fig. 4, a single conical rotor 101 formed with teeth on both sides is arraged between stators 102a, 102b. In a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the gap and cavity systems 15, 151, 16, 161 are omitted and the gap system 27a, 27b is of nozzle-shaped cross-section. The apparatus may be immersed in a liquid to be treated so that a continuous circulation of the liquid takes place. The rotatable cone may be driven via a shaft 13, Fig. 1, or 113, Fig. 4, by a motor above the level of the liquid; compressed air may be supplied to the casing surrounding the shaft in order to prevent liquid or spray reaching the motor. Alternatively (Fig. 10, not shown), the motor may be below a glass vessel through the base of which the driving shaft passes. A pipe may be connected to one of the inlets to supply additional material or air or protective gas. The teeth on the conical surfaces may be inclined or spiral, or may be of different or opposite pitch.
