Abstract
A flux-forming composition for use in producing killed steel ingots by pouring the steel into a mould, coacting the free surface of the steel with a layer of the flux-forming composition and passing an electric current between the steel and an electrode submerged in the composition, comprises 30-65 per cent alumina, 20-55 per cent calcium fluoride, 6-20 per cent magnesium oxide, 0-10 per cent calcium oxide and 0-10 per cent silica. The composition should not contain more than 8 per cent in all of carbon dioxide and water or more than 2 per cent in all of iron and manganese oxides. Other substances, e.g. titanium oxide may be present up to 5 per cent. The constituents may be mixed in granular form or two or more may be fused together, cooled and crushed or granulated.
