Abstract
Vitamins are obtained from micro-organism fermentation broth residues or fish solubles by contacting their aqueous solutions with an activated earth or a water-miscible C1-3 alcohol or ketone, or a phenolic compound or activated carbon when in this latter case the vitamins are eluted therefrom by a mixture of a base, water and a C1-3 alcohol or ketone, or combinations of such processes. Hot dimethyl formamide may be used to extract the vitamins from dry concentrates obtained as above, or from dry fish solubles or solid fermentation residues or to the solutions treated as above, or combinations thereof. The vitamins, in the original solution or after concentration can be separated into two active fractions by contacting their aqueous solutions with a cationexchange resin.ALSO:Growth-stimulating factors are obtained from micro-organism fermentation broth residues or fish solubles by contacting their aqueous solutions with an activated earth or a water-miscible alcohol or ketone having 1-3 carbon atoms. In modifications, the solution is contacted with activated carbon and the factor eluted therefrom with a mixture of a base, water and an alcohol having 1-3 carbon atoms, or the adsorption on carbon followed by elution may be applied to concentrates obtained from contacting with activated earths or C1-3 alcohol or ketone or a combination of both. Dry concentrates of the factor may be extracted with hot dimethylformamide, or such extraction may be applied directly to dry fish solubles or solid fermentation residues, or to the solutions contacted with activated earths or C1-3 alcohols or ketones, or to solutions contacted with activated carbon and subsequent eluation, or to combinations thereof. Phenolic compounds may be used to extract the factors, either directly on the original solutions or after some concentration of the factors has been obtained. The factors in the original solution or after concentration can be separated into two active fractions by contacting their aqueous solutions with a cation-exchange resin. The factors are added to food for animals.
